A game of golf on a soccer field in support of rugby
The Highlanders Rugby Club hosted a golf tournament on the Arbor Park Soccer Field last Friday, January 31, bringing together an array of sports enthusiasts for a family-friendly fund-raiser where everyone had a ball.
A total of 25 teams, which included men, women and children of all ages, participated in the tournament.
While golfing experience was not a pre-requisite for participation, at the end of the day, it was seasoned golfers, Elmar Gouws and Leon Rothman, who took first place.
Highlanders coaching director, André Swanepoel, said the highlight of the event was having families come together and thoroughly enjoy themselves in a safe, social setting.
He explained that the decision to host the tournament at the Arbor Park grounds, instead of the Golf Club was the fact that the grounds were well lit with flood lights, which were better suited to a family event hosted in the late evening.
Funds raised from the event will be used to transport Highlanders rugby players from the outlying townships to matches and practice sessions.
“Community support of the club is important to enable players to participate at a higher level. It makes it possible for Newcastle’s residents to come out and enjoy quality rugby with their families …And the Highlanders provide a high quality brand of rugby,” said Swanepoel.
This year’s rugby matches kick off at the Arbor Park rugby field on March 1. Swanepoel extended his gratitude to all who supported the golf tournamentt.
