Chinese Chamber of Commerce celebrate the Chinese New Year in style
The event marked a stylish welcome to the New Year, drawing the who's who of Newcastle to an elegant affair.
Fireworks illuminated the sky, and the sound of distant drumming echoed when the Newcastle Chinese Chamber of Commerce hosted its Chinese New Year celebrations at the Black Rock Casino on Saturday night, February 15.
Politicians, local leaders, and members of the Chinese community gathered under a grand marquee set up on the casino grounds, joining the celebrations with millions around the world – from China to the global diaspora.
Dignitaries in attendance included the CEO of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Amajuba District Municipality Acting Mayor, Thembelihle Mthembu, Newcastle Municipality Speaker Thengamehlo Zulu, and representatives from the Bank of China, diplomats, Amajuba SAPS Commander, Major General Alexander, and other esteemed guests.
In his address to the local Chinese community, Mthembu highlighted the significant contribution the community has made to the local economy, through the nearly 150 factories in Newcastle that employ local residents.
In a philanthropic gesture, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce donated R100,000 worth of food parcels to the municipality for distribution to disadvantaged households.
The celebration continued with traditional Chinese performances, including the vibrant Lion Dance, which captivated the audience with its energetic movements, accompanied by firecrackers, drums, and rich Chinese symbolism. Musicians took to the stage to serenade the crowd with smooth vocals, while traditional Chinese dancers gracefully glided across the stage. A memorable moment of the night was when Speaker Zulu joined a young dance troupe on stage, showing off his moves to the delight and applause of the crowd.
Attendees were also treated to surprises, with many walking away with valuable wine collections and casino vouchers ranging from R1,000 to R10,000.
As in China, where children receive red envelopes as blessings from their relatives, young children were called up to the stage to receive theirs along with members of the traditional Zulu dance group.
Guests were well-fed, with a delicious spread of pork, seafood, rice, and other delicacies. The Chamber spared no expense in creating a memorable celebration, ensuring that everyone left feeling that it had been one of the best celebrations Newcastle has seen in recent times.
