Runners take on annual Newcastle Harriers Battlefields Marathon
The streets of Newcastle came alive on Saturday, March 1, when athletes of all levels gathered at St Dominic's Newcastle for the much-anticipated Newcastle Harriers Battlefields Marathon.
With a full marathon (42.2 km), half marathon (21.1 km), and a 10 km run on the cards, there was a challenge to suit all fitness levels.
This year’s event featured a brand-new scenic route – one designed to encourage and push runners to their limits.
With beautiful scenery and properly stocked water tables along the way, runners ran with determination and energy.
Allan Villiers, Chairman of the Newcastle Harriers Club, thanked all the runners, marshals, water table teams, helpers, and sponsors, stating,
“Without whom, the race could not have even been possible.”
He also thanked St Dominic’s Newcastle for hosting the venue.
The winners were announced as follows:

- 10 km Ladies: 1st – Rika Rossoux, 2nd – Memory Majoni and 3rd – Abigale Meineke

- 10 km Lady Walker: 1st – Ronel Greyling

- 10 km Men: 1st – Nkosikhona Mjiyakho, 2nd – Mpho Molefe and 3rd – Ngcebo Mgaga. Mpho Molefe was also the Junior Category Winner.

- 10 km Men’s Walker: 1st – Johan Harmse

- 21 km Ladies: 1st – Bianca Cooper, 2nd – Amanda Vergottini and 3rd – Smangele Mnguni

- 21 km Men: 1st – Andile Mbatha, 2nd – Sphamandla Moloi and 3rd – Lethu Ndlovu

- 42 km Ladies: 1st – Ashleigh Hilliar, 2nd – Zethu Mnyandu and 3rd – Thandeka Mlotshwa

- 42 km Men: 1st – Derrick Masango, 2nd – Ayanda Mncube and 3rd – Siboniso Sikhakhane.
