SAWS issues weather warning for Northern KZN.
An Orange Level 6 warning for disruptive rain, with a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in certain areas has been issued in parts of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) on Thursday and Friday (March 13 and14).
The South African Weather Service cautions that the rain may lead to:
– Flooding of roads and settlements, and damage to infrastructure and mud-based houses,
-Possible mudslides
-Major disruption to traffic flow
-Danger to life due to fast flowing streams/deep waters
-Disruption of essential services such as water, electricity and communication.
Affected areas include Newcastle, Emadlangeni and Dannhauser.
SAWS advises the public to take the following precautions:
-Avoid crossing rivers and swollen streams where the water level is above your ankles,
– Abandon vehicles if trapped in floodwaters and move to higher ground,
-Secure valuables above the expected flood level in buildings,
-Turn off electricity at the supply point, and,
-In rural areas, animals are relocated to higher ground.
