600 athletes to compete in SA National Kickboxing Championships in Newcastle

For the first time in history, Newcastle will stage the South African National Kickboxing Championships with over 600 athletes expected to converge on the Newcastle Showgrounds from April 26 - 29.

The milestone event will be a much-needed economic boost for the town.

The majority of accommodation venues in the area have already been reserved in expectation of the arrival of the competitors and spectators, says Newcastle Shuriken MMA Club Sensei, Hendrik Booyse.

The bouts at the championships will feature a variety of fighting styles, including point fighting, light contact, kick-light, forms and weapons, champ of champions, full contact, low kicks, K-1, world games selection, and a point fighting team event.

There will be classes for juniors, seniors, and males and females, offering a thrilling showcase of ability and talent.

Sensei Hendrik commented that hosting the event is a ‘gigantic task to organise an event of this sort, as it is usually reserved for the larger metropolitan centres.’

This is where the Newcastle community and business circles can step up to the plate, offering crucial support in ensuring the event is a huge success.

“There will be around 600 athletes here, many of whom will be accompanied by parents and siblings, due to the event’s timing during school holidays.

“With this in mind, the KwaZulu-Natal Kickboxing Association (KZNKA), a registered non-profit entity, is appealing to businesses for sponsorships and support.”

To enhance the experience for participating athletes, organisers are seeking sponsorships for drawstring bags and their contents, which will include useful branded items such as lip balm, cooling towels, hand sanitiser, pens, and water bottles, offering sponsors decent marketing exposure.

“We encourage sponsors to brand these items, as this presents a great advertising opportunity while supporting the athletes,” said Sensei Hendrik.
