Body of missing teenager found in Ncandu River

The tragedy has sparked a call for especially parents to warn their children against straying towards rivers and streams - especially after heavy rains.

The body of 16-year-old Shaibu Rajab, who had been missing since Tuesday (March 25), was discovered this morning (March 28).

The heart-breaking discovery comes after an extensive search operation along the Ncandu River and its banks.

The search, which had been on-going for the past three days, involved the combined efforts of multiple organizations, security forces, and community members.

Shaibu’s disappearance sparked widespread concern, with local authorities and volunteers working tirelessly to find him.

The recovery operation was a collaborative effort involving Al Imdaad, Disaster Management, Resec Security, the CCPA, Ithemba Security, SAPS PMB Search and Rescue, NHF Newcastle, members of the Newcastle CPF, SAPS Vryheid Search and Rescue, Newcastle SAPS, Ladysmith SAPS Search and Rescue and the broader Newcastle community.

“We express our heartfelt gratitude to all the role players for their unwavering commitment and tireless work during this difficult time,” said Sandile Mdluli, Public Relations Officer for the Newcastle Community Policing Forum.

“Our thoughts are with Shaibu’s family and loved ones as they navigate through this difficult period.”

The tragedy has urged the Newcastle CPF, parents and the community to remain vigilant around rivers and ensure that children are not left unattended near riverbanks. Safety precautions must always be prioritised to prevent such incidents from reoccurring.
