uThukela prepares for Easter weekend
The purpose of the visit was to monitor the new pump.
uThukela District Municipality leadership led an oversight visit to the Ezakheni Water Abstraction Plant on Wednesday (April 16), saying it was part of their efforts to improve water supply and ensure reliability during the upcoming Easter weekend.Â
uThukela Mayor Inkosi NB Shabalala was joined by Deputy Mayor MC Mkhize; Water & Sanitation general manager Mr X Mthembu; members of the Water, Sanitation & Technical Services Portfolio Committee; Ward 20 Councillor Abbas Warasally, and Ladysmith Civic Association chairperson Mr Gaffer. The delegation visited the abstraction point, where the district municipality sources raw water from the Tugela River.
The purpose of the visit was to monitor the recently-completed installation of a new pump, which has significantly enhanced the plant’s water abstraction capacity. This forms part of the phased approach the municipality is implementing to increase water volumes drawn from the river, thereby improving overall distribution to communities, industries and other consumers.
Communities supplied by the Ezakheni Water Treatment Works have, in recent weeks, experienced intermittent water supply. Through the phased installation of new pumping systems, the municipality aims to stabilise and improve the situation.
Mayor Shabalala has directed that water supply to the affected areas, including Ezakheni and Acaciavale, be restored as a matter of urgency. In preparation for the Easter weekend, the Water & Sanitation Department has deployed essential staff who will remain on duty to ensure the continuity of services.

uThukela, however, urges residents to take note that unprecedented and unpredictable weather patterns may impact on supply in certain areas. They remain committed to minimising disruptions and maintaining consistent service delivery to residents.
