Ex-boyfriend gets life after brutal shooting

Thusi was found guilty on five counts

Sibusiso Sifundo Thusi will not see the light of day again, so to speak, after being found guilty of murder, attempted murder and robbery.
Thusi was sentenced on Thursday in the Pietermaritzburg High Court after being convicted of three murders, one attempted murder and aggravated robbery.
The Vryheid Herald reported on the crime, which took place on June 24, 2023. Two women and two men were shot while returning home from a tavern in Bhekuzulu. Thusi held them at gunpoint, demanding cellphones. After they provided him with their phones, he threw them to the ground. When one of the robbery victims reached out to retrieve his phone, Thusi struck him on the forehead with the butt of the gun and then shot him in the chest. He then opened fire on the others, killing the two women. The two men were injured. One of them died as a result of his injuries a week later, while the other recovered and was discharged from Grey’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg.
Investigations revealed that Thusi was an ex-boyfriend of one of the victims.
The case was heard in the Vryheid Court on June 26, 2023, where bail was opposed. The trial started at the Madadeni High Court on March 10 this year and was remanded to April 9 and 10 at the Pietermaritzburg High Court for judgment.
Thusi was found guilty on five counts. On count 1 (robbery with aggravating circumstances), he was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment. On counts 2 to 4 (three murder charges), he received life sentences. On count 5 (attempted murder), he again got life. That makes four life sentences; the sentences will not run concurrently.
