MEC concerned about incomplete housing project in Umbulwane

The department expects to hand over houses by the end of May.

MEC for Transport & Human Settlements Siboniso Duma has raised concerns about the Umbulwane Area H Housing Project in Ward 9, under Alfred Duma Local Municipality, which has been under construction for years.

This follows his visit to the area yesterday (April 22), where he met with the service provider and the community to give an update.

The department blames both uThukela District and Alfred Duma Local municipalities for failing to provide the bulk infrastructure as per agreement. The department says they have also allocated R9 million to upgrade the sewer pump station.

The department asserts that the district municipality has not been able to connect the bulk infrastructure, despite the department’s intervention. As a result, the project has stalled, with community members unable to move in.

A total of 505 houses are to be built at a cost of R120 million.

“We are pleased to observe that there has been progress and the constructor is currently working on the site. However, the concern is that the district municipality has not connected the bulk infrastructure. We plan to escalate the issue to the premier and we expect to hand over the houses that have been completed by the end of May,” said Duma.
