Officially recognised as a public holiday since 1994, its origins in the late 1800s mark a period of labour movements and demands for better working conditions, fair wages and fundamental human rights.

The day is not only a celebration of workers’ rights, but also a reminder of the crucial role that trade unions and other labour organisations played in the fight against apartheid.
