Poachers strike again at local reserve

The value of these rhinos is estimated to be about R1.8 million.

After a couple of months of silence, rhino poachers once again emerged in the Pongola area last week, with devastating consequences. Police were called out after two rhinos were shot – a female and a male. The male’s horn was removed, but the female’s horn was still in place. Both animals were shot with a rifle. The value of these rhinos is estimated to be about R1.8 million. A few days later, another three rhinos, of which one was a calf, were killed in separate incidents in the same area.
