LIFESTYLE: Beat the flu bug using everyday kitchen ingredients

Soothe symptoms and speed up recovery with these five natural flu remedies found in your kitchen

We all know that little flu bug far too well.

It creeps up like a thief in the night and, before you know it, you are man down, feeling as if a truck has driven over you.

Fortunately, an expensive trip to the doctor who may simply confirm you have flu is not always necessary.

Sometimes, all you need is a few everyday kitchen ingredients to help ease your symptoms and support the healing process without breaking the bank.

Here are five natural home remedies believed to help fight off flu:

  • Boost your vitamin C intake:

Vitamin C supports immune function and is a trusted natural remedy for colds and flu.

Eat foods rich in vitamin C, such as oranges, guavas, strawberries and bell peppers to help speed up your recovery.

  • Raw garlic and honey tea:

Garlic is known for its powerful healing properties and ability to support the immune system.

While the flavour may not appeal to everyone, adding honey makes the mixture more palatable, especially for children.

Simply boil water, add chopped garlic and a teaspoon of honey, and sip slowly while resting.

  • Fresh peppermint:

Peppermint is believed to help reduce fever.

You can brew it as a tea or crush the leaves into a paste to apply to the forehead.

Either method may provide soothing relief.

  • Good old-fashioned face steam:

A face steam is an effective way to loosen congestion and ease sinus pressure or a sore throat.

Boil two cups of water and add two teaspoons each of rosemary, thyme and oregano.

Place your face over the pot, cover your head with a towel, and breathe in the steam for 15 minutes or more.

  • Fresh lemon and ginger tea:

Lemon and ginger are both excellent for relieving respiratory issues and sore throats.

Boil 250ml of water, squeeze in the juice of one lemon, and add a few slices of fresh ginger.

Stir for about five minutes.

Drink warm or allow to cool slightly.
