Municipality cautions residents as scammer demands fake payments while posing as disconnection official. Read more here:
The Newcastle Municipality has issued a warning to residents about an ongoing scam involving a fraudster impersonating a municipal official.
According to the Municipality’s communications officer, Mthandeni Myende, a scammer is falsely claiming to be ‘Kelvin Ndlovu, Head of Disconnection’, and is using the cellphone number 078 838 9438 to contact residents.
“The scam involves the fraudster demanding payment into a personal bank account to prevent the disconnection of municipal services,” said Myende.
Myende further confirmed that there is no such position as ‘Head of Disconnection’ within the Newcastle Municipality.
Consumers are urged to be vigilant and reminded that all municipal accounts must be paid directly to the official municipal account, not to any individual.
“Anyone who may have fallen victim to this scam is strongly encouraged to report the incident to the South African Police Service (SAPS) without delay.”
