Motorists happy as fuel price drops

The fuel price drop brings relief in August 2025, with petrol down 28c/l, but diesel and paraffin costs rise.

Motorists can breathe a sigh of relief this month after Minister of Mineral & Petroleum Resources Gwede Mantashe announced an adjustment in fuel prices today (August 5). The good news is that the price of petrol is set to drop, effective tomorrow.

The fuel price drop is a result of a few factors, as follows.

  • Crude oil prices: The average Brent Crude oil price decreased slightly from $69.36 to $69.06 during the period under review;
  • International petroleum product prices: The average international petrol prices decreased in line with the decrease in crude oil prices;
  • Rand/US dollar exchange rate: The rand appreciated on average against the US dollar (from R17.84 to R17.76 per dollar) during the period under review when compared to the previous one;
  • Implementation of the Slate Levy: The cumulative slate amounted to a positive balance of R3.707 billion for petrol and diesel at the end of June this year.

However, it’s not all good news, as the prices of diesel and paraffin will be increasing.

  • Petrol 93 (ULP & LRP): 28 cents per litre decrease;
  • Petrol 95 (ULP &LRP): 28 cents per litre decrease;
  • Diesel (0.05% sulphur): 65 cents per litre increase;
  • Diesel (0.005% sulphur): 63 cents per litre increase;
  • Illuminating paraffin (wholesale): 32 cents per litre increase;
  • SMNRP for IP: 43 cents per litre increase;
  • Maximum retail price of LP Gas: 69 cents per kilogram decrease and 78 cents per kilogram decrease in the Western Cape.
