Police face probe after taking learner to matric dance
The officers have been suspended, pending an investigation.
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has ordered the ‘temporary removal’ of Estcourt police officers who were filmed taking a learner to Estcourt High School’s matric dance using a state vehicle.
The video, which has gone viral on social media, shows on-duty officers neglecting their duties while ferrying the child of a colleague to the dance on Friday (August 22).
Mkhwanazi has condemned the misuse of state resources, stressing that communities often complain about the shortage of police vehicles, while some officers are misusing vehicles for their own personal gain.
He has instructed the Uthukela District Commissioner to take urgent disciplinary action and for finance officials to calculate the financial loss incurred. The officers may also be held personally liable for state petrol, time and vehicle costs.

“Police must be professional at all times and protect the image of the organisation. Anyone found misusing state property will face disciplinary action and possible criminal charges,” said Mkhwanazi.
