Thieves vandalise pump station, leave Signal Hill without water

Thieves vandalised the Milkyway pump station, leaving Signal Hill residents without water for nearly a week. Newcastle Municipality vows action. Read more here:

Signal Hill residents are outraged over being left without running water for almost a week.

The disruption was allegedly caused by criminals who targeted and vandalised the Milky Way pump station.

Newcastle Municipality spokesperson, Mthandeni Myende, confirmed that the municipality faced ‘significant challenges’ following the theft of electrical supply cables at the Milkyway pump station, which disrupted the water supply to residents in the western region.

“A burst pipe supplying water to the Uranus pump station has further worsened service delivery issues. Additionally, the wastewater treatment works were targeted, with electrical supply cables and pumps stolen, severely affecting wastewater treatment operations,” he said.

He added that acts of vandalism at sewer pump stations had damaged critical electrical connections controlling pumps, undermining effective sewage management.

“The Newcastle Municipality unequivocally condemns these egregious acts of theft and vandalism,” Myende said. “We issue a grave warning to any individuals contemplating or involved in such criminal activities – culprits will face the full force of the law.”

According to Myende, the municipality will pursue maximum prosecution under applicable laws for acts of infrastructure theft and vandalism.

“Such criminal acts jeopardise essential services, endanger public health, and show blatant disregard for community wellbeing,” he said.

He added that ‘these crimes result in substantial financial losses for the municipality, diverting critical funds that could otherwise improve services or support development projects within the community.’

“The ongoing need to replace and repair stolen or damaged infrastructure strains municipal resources and affects our ability to expand or enhance service delivery,” he added.

Myende stressed that the municipality will not tolerate interference with critical infrastructure and will work closely with law enforcement agencies to identify and apprehend those responsible.

He urged residents to report any suspicious activity or information about infrastructure vandalism or theft to municipal authorities or law enforcement without delay.

“Collective vigilance and cooperation are vital to protecting community assets and services. The Newcastle Municipality remains committed to delivering essential services and safeguarding infrastructure, highlighting the importance of community partnership in tackling criminal activities that affect service delivery,” Myende concluded.
