Local businessman and humanitarian Reeaz Moola, who was detained by Israeli forces while travelling to Gaza as part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, is expected to arrive back in South Africa shortly after 10am today (October 8).

The flotilla was intercepted in international waters last Wednesday while attempting to deliver vital humanitarian aid to war-stricken Gaza.

Department of International Relations and Cooperation confirms return to South Africa

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation confirmed the safe arrival of the Flotilla activists in Jordan yesterday, October 7.

“Our Ambassador, Her Excellency Tselane Mokuena, was present to receive the delegation on behalf of the Republic,” said Chrispin Phiri (Ministry Spokesperson).

Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa, Ronald Lamola, reiterated the government’s profound gratitude to all stakeholders who contributed to this successful outcome through their cooperation and support.’

He added that the delegation was scheduled to arrive at the O.R. Tambo International Airport this morning.

“We have noted deliberate misinformation related to the government’s role in this process. Families and solidarity groups are providing financial support to facilitate the delegation’s return. The South African Government’s role has been one of diplomatic facilitation and engagement with all relevant parties,” he concluded.

Reeaz is expected to return to Newcastle on Thursday, where he will be welcomed by family, friends, and the community.
