Police urge vigilance as child neglect and rape cases rise
Major General Gonya has appealed to parents, guardians and the community at large to play an active role in protecting children.
Police are issuing a stern warning to parents and guardians following a worrying increase in rape cases involving young victims in the Uthukela District.
According to District Commissioner Major General TE Gonya, many of the victims are minors who were assaulted by relatives or people known to them. “It is alarming to note that in most of the reported cases, the victims are very young and have been raped or abused by their own family members or someone close to them. Perpetrators will not be spared from the full might of the law,” said Gonya.
The SAPS have further expressed concern over the growing lack of parental or guardian supervision, warning that adults who fail in their duty of care may face criminal charges.
