Municipality launches recycling programme

Residents are urged to use the yellow bags for their recyclable waste.

Alfred Duma Local Municipality launched the Separation at Source Pilot Programme in Ward 12 on Wednesday morning (November 5). A meeting was held on open land at the end of Rawlinson Street as it meets up with Ruby Gailey Drive.

Residents of the area gathered for the meeting, where municipal officials shared information regarding this pilot programme which, for now, is focused on some parts of Ward 12 and Ward 20.

Environmental Officer Ms Mbali Zwane said the Separation at Source Pilot Programme is about sorting waste before disposal, adding that the aims are:

  • To reduce environmental pollution,
  • Encourage recycling and re-use,
  • Cut down on waste management costs, and also
  • To promote sustainable development.

Ward 12 Councillor Sharon Buys welcomed the initiative and expressed much interest in keeping the streets of her ward clean. Community members advised the municipality to visit local schools and educate the learners about this programme as well.

As part of the initiative, the municipality distributed free yellow recycling bags to participating households. A Why Waste truck will be collecting the recycling bags on waste collection day.
