Tomato truck crashes on R103

Community members used the opportunity to grab tomatoes from the road.

A truck carrying a load of tomatoes crashed on the R103 between Frere and Cornfields this morning (November 11). According to reports, the driver was injured and rushed to hospital. A passenger escaped unharmed.

The exact cause of the accident is not known at this stage.

Moments after the crash

Thousands of tomatoes had spilled across the roadway and opportunistic community members grabbed as many of the fruit as they could before the authorities arrived. Officials monitored the situation and advised motorists to proceed with caution while clean-up operations were underway. The situation was potentially dangerous, as cars were stopping and people were picking up tomatoes wherever they could.

According to authorities, the R103 is becoming an accident hot-spot and crashes on this road are on the rise. This particular crash happened at exactly the same spot where a truck transporting cattle overturned recently. A number of cows died in that crash.
