Vryheid remembers fallen heroes on Remembrance Day

Vryheid’s Freedom Shellhole hosts a moving Remembrance Day tribute to honour fallen soldiers.

A small but dedicated group of people gathered at the cenotaph outside St Peters Anglican Church on Sunday to mark Remembrance Day, hosted by Freedom Shellhole. The ceremony offered a quiet, heartfelt moment to honour those who gave their lives in service of their country.

Wreaths and prayers at the cenotaph

Wreaths and colourful floral tributes were laid at the memorial, inscribed with the names of fallen soldiers. The attendees observed moments of reflection, and offered prayer and scripture.

Speech calls for renewed respect and remembrance

André van Ellinckhuyzen gave a moving speech, contrasting the local turnout with the larger observances seen around the world. “In countries like America, Britain, Australia, France and New Zealand, Remembrance Day, or Poppy Day, is marked with ceremony and pride,” he said. “Here in Vryheid, it is a struggle each year to gather even a handful of people. The same faces, the same voices. Are we losing the sense of honour and respect for those who served?”

Message of courage and sacrifice

He reminded those present about the courage of people who stand up for their beliefs, highlighting both global conflicts and local challenges such as crime and farm attacks. “Let us never forget those who had the courage to stand and be counted,” he said. “I salute every person who paid the ultimate price so that we can stand here today to remember. Laat ons hulle vir altyd onthou! Aan God al die eer!”

Ceremony ends with reflection and prayer

The ceremony concluded with a prayer, leaving the small gathering to reflect on sacrifice, bravery and the importance of remembering those who served.
