“Give preterm babies a strong start for a brighter future.”
On November 18, the NICU superheroes at Newcastle Regional Hospital proudly celebrated World Prematurity Day.
From tiny socks to enormous courage, every milestone reached by a preterm baby is a moment worth cheering.
As NICU healthcare workers, we stand with the tiniest fighters — babies born too soon. Premature babies are true warriors; each milestone, each breath, and each moment is a victory.
On this special day, we honour every tiny hero, every devoted parent, and every healthcare worker who supports them.
World Prematurity Day, observed each year on 17 November, raises awareness about premature births, babies born before 37 weeks of pregnancy and the challenges faced by preterm infants and their families.
Why this day matters?
- One in ten babies worldwide is born prematurely.
- Premature birth is a leading cause of infant deaths globally.
- Many preterm babies face long-term health challenges. They often struggle with breathing, feeding, and development, although early and specialised care greatly improves their outcomes.
- Families of premature infants experience emotional, physical, and financial stress.
- Early detection, quality prenatal care, and strong community support can save lives.
How you can help?
- Everyone can play a role in supporting preterm infants and their families:
- Educate yourself and others about preterm birth.
- Raise awareness within your community.
- Support parents and caregivers in the NICU.
- Support organisations that provide neonatal care and research.
- Wear purple, the colour symbolising this important day.
On World Prematurity Day, we remember the tiny fighters who arrive too early and celebrate the resilience of their families. Together, we can help every baby have a healthy start to life.
