Court acquits two in high-profile murder trial
Two former Newcastle CPF members acquitted after court rules State failed to prove its case. Two co-accused continue to face a murder charge.
Two of the four former Newcastle Community Policing Forum (CPF) members charged with murder were acquitted when the high-profile trial resumed before Magistrate Sibisi, today, November 26.
The case has held the town’s attention for months.
Mahomed Ashraf and Yaseen Mohamed were released after the court found no evidence linking them to the death of 26-year-old Khulekani Hlatshwayo, who was killed on December 24, 2022.
Their defence attorneys, Ravindra Maniklall and Zubair Chothia, applied for a discharge on November 17, arguing that the State had failed to present a sufficient case. The court agreed.
While Ashraf and Mohamed left the courtroom relieved, the two remaining accused, Ismaeel Dhalech and Ebrahim Adams, will still stand trial on the murder charge.
Their case is scheduled to continue today and Monday, December 1.
