Newcastle stylist shines at world hairdressing championships

Newcastle hairstylist, Estelle Chetty, represented South Africa on the global stage, showcasing creativity, craftsmanship and passion at an international competition.

Growing up in the small town of Newcastle, I never imagined that a simple love of hairstyling would one day take me across the world.

What began as a hobby; something I practised with passion and curiosity, has grown into a journey filled with milestones I once only dreamed of.

This year, I was selected to join the South African team representing our country at the World Hairdressing Championships in Russia.

For many, it may seem like an unusual event, but within the beauty industry it is one of the most prestigious stages to stand on.

Being chosen as one of only ten hairstylists in South Africa felt surreal.

The World Championships brought together 45 countries, 63 teams and more than 1,500 participants, marking a historic moment in global hairdressing.

It opened my eyes not only to the artistry of hairstyling, but also to the extraordinary world of pastiche – the creation of sculptures, garments and modules entirely from hair.

Earlier this year, our South African team held a showcase event in Johannesburg where all members designed a unique piece made purely from hair.

Yes, from single strands to full dresses, painstakingly crafted by hand.

The year proved nothing short of life-changing.

I had the honour of styling Mrs South Africa, Miss Teen Universe, and witnessing Miss South Africa being photographed in a dress I created entirely from hair.

Moments like these felt as though I had stepped into my own dream. One of the categories I entered at the championships focused on pastiche, with ‘Birds’ chosen as the theme.

Determined to honour the many hours spent perfecting my floral elements, I created a piece titled Hummingbirds in a Garden.

It featured a hair-constructed cage holding a mother and baby bird, birds ‘flying’ around my dress and even a tiny baby bird perched on my finger.

Every feather was individually cut, shaped and placed, each detail crafted entirely from hair.

None of this would have been possible without my mentor, Sandy Francis, a respected South African representative and elder at the World Championships.

She believed in my potential and nurtured my passion from the very beginning.

I remain deeply grateful for her guidance and for opening a door I never imagined I would walk through.

Months of sleepless nights, creativity, dedication and love came to life in South Africa and Russia.

I stood proudly beside some of the most talented artists in our country, and together we brought home a trophy.

I have also been fortunate to learn from world-renowned stylists whose work appears in films and series such as Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, James Bond, Disney productions, and on icons such as Naomi Campbell, Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman, Sofia Carson and many of our Miss South Africa winners and South African influencers.

I offer professional hairstyling services for every occasion; from glamorous birthdays and matric farewells to exquisite bridal looks.

My exclusive studio is located in the heart of Central, Newcastle.

I am deeply thankful to my family and friends for their unwavering support and the love they have poured into every step of this journey. Their encouragement has been my strength when I needed it most.

Above all, I thank the Lord for being my guide and my portion, for carrying me through and turning one of my greatest dreams into a beautiful reality.

My journey is proof that when you believe in yourself and work tirelessly towards your goals, Maphupho Fezeka – dreams do come true.
