Okhahlamba mayor leads road safety and anti-drug campaign

The campaign focused on road safety, drug awareness and business compliance.

Okhahlamba Local Municipality launched its Festive Season Road Safety Compliance Campaign recently.

According to Okhahlamba, the aim is to demonstrate firm action to safeguard residents and visitors during the busy holiday period.

The campaign kicked off with a high-visibility roadblock at the R74 and R616 intersection, where officials inspected vehicles for roadworthiness and engaged motorists on critical road safety practices.

The focus of the operation is to reinforce the municipality’s zero-tolerance stance on drunk driving, encourage adherence to traffic laws, and remind motorists that responsible driving saves lives.

Awareness flyers were distributed throughout the engagement to educate road-users on safety expectations as traffic volumes increase over the festive season.

The operation was led by Mayor VR Mlotshwa, alongside Deputy Mayor NE Tshabalala and Speaker SZ Khumalo.

Law enforcement stakeholders

The municipality was strongly supported by:

  • South African Police Service (SAPS);
  • Municipal Law Enforcement;
  • South African National Defence Force (SANDF);
  • South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO); and
  • Okhahlamba Local Municipality officials.

Compliance inspections conducted at several businesses

Following the roadside operation, the campaign continued with a second phase focusing on compliance inspections in several stores within the Bergville CBD.

The leadership also had a walkabout at the Bergville Taxi Rank, where drug searches and anti-crime interventions were carried out in partnership with law enforcement agencies.

Mayor Mlotshwa reiterated the municipality’s unwavering commitment to creating a safer, healthier community:
