Strong performances mark Vryheid’s 2025 sporting calendar

Vryheid’s sporting year delivered strong performances, major events and growing community support across multiple codes.

Vryheid’s sporting year was packed with memorable moments, strong performances, and events that brought athletes and spectators together across several disciplines. From the rugby field to the shooting range, long-distance running routes and high-speed rally terrain, local sport delivered a full and colourful 2025.

Steady progress for Vryheid Rugby Club

Vryheid Rugby Club wrapped up a solid season marked by steady growth and determined play. The team showed improved cohesion as the year progressed, with several younger players stepping confidently into key positions. Home games drew enthusiastic support and helped build momentum for the club’s future plans. It was a year defined by commitment, consistency and a clear sense of direction.

A busy and successful year for local runners

Vryheid Athletics Club enjoyed another busy and successful year, taking part in races across KwaZulu-Natal and further afield. The focus for many members remained on working toward Comrades qualifiers, and several runners met their goals with strong marathon times. Social runs, including the much-loved Wimpy Coffee Run, kept the club’s spirit high and brought in new members. The club closes off 2025 with a growing base of runners who continue to support one another on and off the road.

Rally action brings excitement to Vryheid roads

The usually quiet roads and farmlands around Vryheid roared into life as top rally teams battled it out in the VAPS HCV Vryheid 400, the fifth round of the 2025 South African Rally-Raid Championship.

Why Vryheid was chosen to host the rally

According to SA Rally-Raid CEO Archie Rutherford, Vryheid was selected for its challenging terrain and strong local interest. “We decided on Vryheid because Ryan Bland, who previously competed in the rally and is a former Vryheid resident, once mentioned that Vryheid has some excellent potential to host an event,” Rutherford explained. Race director Evan Hutchison later investigated the area, and last year saw the town’s first Rally-Raid event take shape.

Building on a successful rally foundation

This year’s race built on that foundation, delivering fast action, demanding stages and a festive atmosphere that drew crowds from across the region.

Precision shooting takes centre stage

They jokingly like to call it ‘golf, but for men’, and this year Vryheid had its first opportunity to host the Natal Gong Series at Penbi Game Lodge. The three-day shoot drew competitors from across South Africa, including teams who travelled from as far as Kathu. The event tested accuracy, control and patience, and Vryheid’s shooters stood their ground among a highly skilled field. Hosting the series for the first time placed Vryheid firmly on the map in precision shooting circles.

Looking ahead after a strong year

Vryheid’s sports community can look back on 2025 with pride. Each club, event and athlete contributed to a strong year of competition and camaraderie. As preparations for 2026 begin, the town’s sporting landscape continues to grow, carrying the momentum of a year filled with standout moments.
