Dundee records exceptional rainfall as 2025 sets new annual record
Dundee records unusually high rainfall in December as 2025 becomes the wettest year in more than a century.
Dundee recorded exceptionally high rainfall in December 2025, receiving more than double its long-term monthly average.
According to researcher Douglas Gordon, the town recorded 300.25mm of rain during December, compared to the long-term average of 144mm. Rain fell on 22 days during the month, with daily totals ranging from as little as 0.5mm to a high of 48mm.
Second half of month saw heaviest rain
Gordon said that 66.5% of December’s rainfall was recorded in the latter half of the month.
“While the highest December rainfall on record remains 350mm, recorded in 2012, this year’s figures are still highly significant,” he said.
For context, the lowest December rainfall ever recorded in Dundee was just 29mm in 1945. The town’s long-term average rainfall for January is 145mm.
Wettest year in 124 years
Gordon also confirmed that Dundee has set a new annual rainfall record. Between January 1 and December 31, 2025, the town received a total of 1,567mm of rain.
“This is the highest annual rainfall recorded in 124 years,” said Gordon.
The long-term annual average rainfall for Dundee is 831mm, while the lowest annual total on record was 396mm, measured in 1951.
The figures highlight just how exceptional 2025 has been in terms of rainfall, with potential implications for infrastructure, agriculture and local communities.
