Sithembile residents continue their water protests after blocking entrance to township

Roads reopen near Sithembile after protests disrupt travel, as residents voice anger over ongoing water outages in Glencoe.

Endumeni Traffic officials report that roads near Sithembile, Glencoe, are now open following this morning’s protest against continuing water outages in the area.

Earlier, many could not get to work as all entrances in and out of Sithembile were obstructed by burning tyres, logs and other obstacles.

Cllr Mbulelo Pakathi said Umzinyathi District Municipal officials were warned that urgent intervention was needed to resolve the water issues.

“Now we are landed in this position where people are protesting,” he told the Courier.

Meetings were held earlier between officials and residents’ representatives, but it is not clear if any solutions were decided upon.

Meanwhile, residents who spoke to the Courier warned that they will continue blocking roads and marching until Umzinyathi resolves thier grievances.
