Electricity disconnection disrupts schooling in Estcourt

The situation has caused frustration among parents, teachers and learners, who are calling for an urgent resolution.

Several schools in Estcourt have informed parents and learners that their electricity supply has been disconnected causing serious disruptions.

According to notices sent out by school management, the power outages have made it difficult for schools to operate normally, affecting classrooms, administration and essential services. As a result, some schools have advised learners not to attend school tomorrow (January 16), while others have indicated that learners will be released earlier than usual.

School authorities have expressed concern that the situation undermines the culture of teaching and learning, particularly as schools have just opened for the academic term.

At this stage, it is alleged that the electricity disconnections are linked to unpaid municipality rates, reportedly involving the Department of Education or the Department of Public Works. However, no official confirmation has been issued regarding which department is responsible.
