Lyell Street business hit by sewer leak

The leak has left staff facing an unbearable stench and health risks, despite repeated calls to uThukela.

Sewer nightmare

For months, a foul stench has hung stubbornly over a business in Lyell Street, turning what should be a normal working environment into a daily ordeal. Since November last year, the unresolved problem has plagued the area, disrupting business operations and putting the health of staff at serious risk.

“The smell is unbearable”

Staff member Samantha Fourie says the situation has gone from bad to worse. According to her, the sewer leak has been reported to uThukela on numerous occasions, yet no lasting solution has been provided.
“The smell is terrible,” Fourie explained. “It’s not something you can ignore. We work in it every day and it’s a serious health hazard.” The overpowering odour seeps through the premises, making it difficult for staff to concentrate, let alone feel safe in their workplace.

Health and hygiene at risk

Beyond the smell, the leaking sewer poses a direct threat to health and hygiene. Contaminated water flows through the area, creating unsanitary conditions that staff are forced to endure daily. Employees fear that prolonged exposure could lead to illness, yet they feel their concerns have fallen on deaf ears, said Fourie.

Business brought to a standstill

The business is unable to carry out basic operations such as washing vehicles. “Whenever we try to wash our vehicles, they just get messed up by the sewer water,” Fourie said. “It’s pointless and frustrating.” This ongoing problem has affected productivity and damaged the professional image of the business.

Growing frustration with uThukela

After months of waiting, patience has worn thin. Staff say they are now up-in-arms with uThukela, as the municipality is failing to act despite repeated calls and complaints.
