Dundee residents demand action as cemetery conditions deteriorate

Residents call on the municipality to fix neglect at cemeteries, citing sewage spills, overgrown graves and damage to headstones.

With the new year barely two weeks old, Dundee residents have voiced growing anger over the deteriorating condition of local cemeteries, blaming poor maintenance by the municipality.

Graves are reportedly surrounded by overgrown grass, damaged tombstones and fallen tree branches that have not been cleared. A resident, who asked not to be named, said families visiting loved ones are often confronted with distressing and undignified scenes.

Sewage and safety concerns

There are also serious concerns about sewage spillages, with effluent allegedly flowing onto grave sites. The resident said the situation worsens over weekends when burials take place, adding to the distress of grieving families.

Further complaints include liquor bottles left behind by mourners and livestock roaming freely through cemetery grounds, causing damage to graves and headstones.

Residents have called on Endumeni Municipality to urgently address maintenance, sanitation and access control to ensure cemeteries are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

Ward councillor Naresh Gopie told the Courier he was awaiting feedback from officials responsible for cemetery maintenance.

Endumeni Municipality has been asked for comment and this will be published once received.
