Rotary hosts walks, swims and festivals to raise funds and bring community together

Residents can walk, swim and celebrate culture while supporting learners, health causes and community projects in the Dundee area.

Endumeni residents have several opportunities in the coming months to stay active, support charitable causes and enjoy cultural and community events.

Walk for school shoes

The Rotary Club of Dundee is inviting the public to take part in its Walk for School Shoes on Saturday, January 24, at the Dundee Golf Club.

The scenic route allows participants to walk any distance up to 5km while enjoying the outdoors. The entry fee is R50, with proceeds going towards buying new school shoes for learners at local primary schools. Additional donations are welcome.

The walk starts at 07:00, with participants encouraged to arrive earlier to register. Refreshments will be on sale, and those unable to walk are still welcome to support the initiative by enjoying a muffin and coffee at the venue.

Swim to help eradicate polio

Rotary will also host a Swim for Polio Eradication event on Friday, January 31, at Dundee High School’s swimming pool.

The swim runs from 13:00 to 17:00, with an entry fee of R10. All proceeds will go towards the global effort to eradicate polio. Free aqua aerobics sessions will be offered at 14:00 and 16:00.

Thaipoosam Kavady Festival

The Dundee Hindu Temple will host the annual Thaipoosam Kavady Festival from Friday, January 23, to Sunday, February 1. The 10-day festival includes a series of sacred ceremonies and cultural observances.

The programme begins with a flag-hoisting ceremony on Friday, January 23, at 17:30.

Key events include the Marieamman Kumbum on Friday, January 30, at 18:00, followed by the Chariot Parade at 18:30. On Saturday, January 31, Navagraha Shanti takes place at 06:00, with Thirukalyanam at 18:00. The main Thaipoosam Kavady ceremony will be held on Sunday, February 1, at 08:00, followed by flag de-hoisting at 13:00.

Devotees intending to carry kavady on the main festival day are reminded that fasting begins on Friday, January 23. Devotees must provide their own coconuts, flowers and limes, and decorate their own kavadies.

Obayam contributions are R50, while paal kodums and kavadies cost R80. Raffle prizes will be announced during the festival.

Historic Uelzen Bazaar returns

The annual Uelzen Church Bazaar will take place on April 25 at the historic church on Sunset Rest.

The bazaar opens at 11:00, offering stalls, homemade products and a relaxed country atmosphere. The delicatessen opens at midday, lunch is served at 13:00, and the popular meat stall will open at 14:00, offering quality meats at farmers’ prices.

Families are invited to enjoy a full day out in a beautiful rural setting.
