Woman assaulted by Ladysmith KZN female police officer

The matter is under investigation say Ladysmith police.

Ladysmith police are investigating a viral video involving officers operating in the Watermeet / Besters area. CCTV footage recorded on Sunday evening, December 21 last year, shortly before 18:00, shows a female police officer allegedly assaulting a young woman outside a tavern.

Tavern raid

The incident reportedly occurred during a police raid on the tavern. In the footage, the woman is seen standing outside the premises carrying what appears to be beer. The officer is then seen exiting the tavern and allegedly slapping the woman several times, causing her to drop some of the beers.

Police confirm the assault

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan confirmed that the incident did take place and involved Ladysmith police officers. He added that the matter is under investigation.

The video has drawn widespread reaction on social media, with opinion sharply divided. Many viewers have sided with the female officer, whom they believe was provoked, while others have voiced support for the young woman and are calling for legal action against the police.
