4 injured in serious crash on R69 near Vryheid

Three people were injured, one seriously, in a collision on the R69 near Vryheid.

Four people were injured, one seriously, following a motor vehicle collision on the R69 just outside Vryheid this morning (Saturday).

Emergency services respond to severe crash

KwaZulu Private Ambulance Services were dispatched to the scene at approximately 08:00, where emergency crews encountered what they described as a severe crash involving two passenger vehicles. The impact caused one of the vehicles to leave the roadway, overturn and roll down an embankment before coming to rest in dense roadside vegetation.

Paramedics stabilise injured patients

Paramedics immediately triaged the scene and identified three patients in need of medical attention. One patient sustained serious injuries and required advanced life support intervention to be stabilised.

Father and child escape with minor injuries

Remarkably, a father and his four-year-old son, who were travelling in the vehicle that rolled down the embankment, escaped with only minor injuries despite the severity of the crash. A pedestrian in the vicinity was also injured after being struck by debris thrown from the vehicles during the collision, though these injuries were described as minor.

Emergency crews highlight fortunate outcome

“All patients were stabilised at the scene before being transported to a nearby medical facility for further care,” said Craig Botha, KwaZulu Private Ambulance Services media liaison. “Given the extent of the damage and the rollover, it is fortunate that there were no fatalities.”

Authorities secure scene and investigate

The South African Police Service and the local Fire Department were on scene to secure the area and assist with recovering the wreckage from the embankment. The cause of the collision is still unknown and is under investigation by authorities.

Traffic briefly affected

Traffic on the R69 was briefly affected, with minor delays reported while emergency and recovery teams worked to clear the roadway. Motorists have been urged to exercise caution, especially during busy morning travel periods.
