Community raises alarm over dangerous sinkhole in Loskop Road

There is a fear that the road will worsen, leading to a tragedy.

The Estcourt community has raised serious concerns about Loskop Road following the formation of a sinkhole caused by recent heavy rains, which led to closure of the section affected.

Road remains closed

The affected section of Loskop Road in the Rosedale area remains closed due to safety risks. Motorists have been forced to use alternative routes, with many now using a small road that has been opened next to it – some now travelling via the Winterton road to reach their respective destinations. The ongoing closure has caused major inconvenience for businesses and commuters.

Growing community frustration

A concerned Estcourt resident, who asked to remain anonymous, expressed frustration over what he described as a lack of response from the Department of Transport.

He commented that, “It has been more than a month since the main road to Loskop was damaged by heavy rains in the Rosedale area, and the situation continues to worsen each day. Yet nothing is being done to repair the road. Taxis and private motorists are still forced to use the same damaged route because there is no proper alternative road to Loskop. Hundreds of learners travel daily to schools in Estcourt, putting their lives at risk. Educators are also affected. The road has become extremely hazardous for all users. We demand urgent intervention before lives are lost.”

Community members warn that the deteriorating condition of the road poses a serious danger, particularly to school transport vehicles and taxis that operate in the area.

Broader impact

The damage is not only affecting local residents. Tourists who frequently use Loskop Road are also impacted, raising concerns about safety and the potential negative effect on local tourism and the economy.
