Ladysmith Hindu community unites for Maha Shivaratri

The temple echoed with rhythmic mantra chanting and devotional singing.

The Sanathan Dharma Sabha (SDS) Mandhir was filled to capacity last Sunday (February 15) as hundreds of devotees gathered to observe the sacred night of Maha Shivaratri.

A night of worship

The auspicious programme began at 18:00 and continued until the next morning, with worshippers arriving dressed in traditional attire and carrying offerings of fruit and milk. The evening featured prayer, bhajans, kirtans, pooja, hawan and spiritual discourses dedicated to Lord Shiva.

According to SDS president Yashveer Maharaj, the atmosphere inside the mandhir was deeply moving.

“The spiritual vibrations throughout the night were incredibly powerful and uplifting. Devotees were fully immersed in prayer and chanting, and many expressed feeling a profound sense of peace and spiritual elevation,” he said.

The temple resonated with rhythmic mantra chanting and devotional singing as the sacred hawan fire burned brightly, symbolising purification and divine blessings. The collective prayers strengthened the sense of unity among those present.

Triumph of light over darkness and ignorance

Officiating priest Pundit JK Maharaj guided the congregation through the rituals and explained the spiritual significance of the night. He reminded the devotees that Maha Shivaratri symbolises the triumph of light over darkness and ignorance, encouraging reflection on discipline, faith and devotion.

Community support and unity

Maharaj expressed heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming community support. “This celebration once again demonstrated the strong spiritual foundation and unity of the Ladysmith Hindu community. We are grateful to everyone who contributed to making the evening a success,” he added.

“Strict security and organised arrangements ensured a safe and smooth gathering. As dawn approached, devotees departed with renewed spiritual strength and gratitude after what many described as an unforgettable night of devotion,” said the SDS president.
