Dundee’s Braam Botes keeps resolution and conquers Midmar Mile

Dundee swimmer completes first Midmar Mile after January training and disciplined diet.

Braam Botes proved that New Year resolutions can indeed be kept when he completed his first Midmar Mile earlier this month.

Determined to lose weight and take on a personal challenge, Botes began his fitness journey on January 2. Inspired by time spent with his grandchild over Christmas, he committed to regular training sessions and healthier eating habits.

He prepared for the 1.6km open water swim by training at the Dundee High School pool and adjusting his diet to build stamina and endurance.

First dam swim on race day

This year’s Midmar Mile, widely regarded as the world’s largest open water swim, attracted more than 9 000 participants over two days in early February.

Despite the scale of the event, Botes made a conscious decision not to practise in a dam beforehand.

“If I had gone, for instance, to Hattingspruit, I do not think I would have gone ahead – it would have put me off,” he said. “So when I went into Midmar, it was my first dam swim.”

With careful pacing and steady determination, Botes crossed the finish line to cheers from family and friends.

His wife, Veronica, who has completed several Midmar Miles herself, provided encouragement and practical advice throughout his preparation.

Reflecting on his achievement, Botes joked that he may be the only one in his circle of friends who has ever successfully kept a New Year’s resolution.
