Questions mount over R424m R69 project

Motorist questions delays in R424-million R69 rehabilitation between Vryheid and Louwsburg.

A daily road user on the R69 between Vryheid and Louwsburg is calling for answers about the long-promised upgrade of the route, nearly a year after a R424-million rehabilitation project was announced.

The stretch of road has long frustrated motorists, truck drivers and residents, who regularly raise concerns about potholes, uneven surfaces and overall safety. For many who rely on the route for work and transport, the condition of the road remains a serious concern.

Herald seeks clarity from MEC’s office

The concerned motorist approached the Vryheid Herald seeking clarity on when construction will officially begin and how long the project is expected to take once it gets underway.

In response, the Herald submitted a formal enquiry to the office of the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, requesting confirmation of the planned start date and the projected completion timeline.

Questions over contractor credibility

Concerns were also raised about the track record and credibility of the appointed construction company, with the road user asking for reassurance that the rehabilitation will be carried out properly and without unnecessary delays.

Key provincial route under scrutiny

The R69 is a key provincial artery, linking Vryheid and Louwsburg and serving as an important route for commuters, freight transport and local economic activity in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Any uncertainty around its upgrade is therefore a matter of public interest.

At the time of publication, no response had been received from the MEC’s office. The Herald will update readers as soon as further information becomes available.
