Disaster teams respond to severe storm in Pongola
Disaster teams act fast in uPhongolo after a severe storm hits, clearing roads and assisting residents.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has deployed disaster management teams to uPhongolo Local Municipality following a severe storm that struck the area on Sunday afternoon.
Heavy rainfall and strong winds cause damage
Around 16:00, parts of uPhongolo, particularly Ward 11 in the town area, were hit by heavy rainfall and strong winds. The storm, which lasted about 30 minutes, caused localised flooding, toppled trees, and damage to both public and private property. Several roads, including the N2 national route, were temporarily blocked by fallen trees.
Rapid clean-up restores blocked roads
Working alongside the municipality, disaster management teams used municipal yellow plant equipment to remove debris and reopen the affected roads. The N2 has since been cleared and reopened, though some internal roads remain waterlogged as monitoring and clean-up efforts continue.
No fatalities reported, assessment ongoing
While the full extent of the damage is still being assessed, no fatalities or injuries have been reported so far.
MEC emphasises safety and vigilance
MEC Buthelezi emphasised the importance of rapid response and public safety. “Our teams were dispatched immediately to support the municipality, clear blocked routes, and assess the impact of the storm. We appeal to residents to remain vigilant, avoid flooded areas, and exercise caution while clean-up operations continue,” he said.
Disaster management remains on the ground
Disaster management personnel remain on the ground, working closely with local authorities to complete assessments, clear remaining obstructions, and provide assistance to affected communities.
