Police arrest two suspects with illegal firearms during Umzinyathi intelligence operation

Police arrest two suspects and seize a pistol and rifle during a joint intelligence-driven operation in the Ngome area.

Two suspects aged 22 and 23 were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition during a multidisciplinary, intelligence-driven operation in the Ngome area under the Greytown policing precinct.

The arrests were made in the early hours of Monday, March 9, when a joint operational team acted on information about individuals allegedly in possession of illegal firearms.

The operation involved members of the Pietermaritzburg Flying Squad, Greytown Visible Policing, Pietermaritzburg Public Order Policing, and other law enforcement agencies.

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Siyabonga Nkwanyana, officers proceeded to the identified location where two suspects were found in possession of unlicensed firearms.

Police recovered a pistol and an LM6 rifle, together with ammunition.

The suspects were immediately arrested and detained at Greytown Police Station.

They are expected to appear before the Greytown Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether they may be linked to any previously committed crimes.

Investigations are continuing.
