Police seize rifle and pistol in Bhekuzulu operation

Vryheid police arrest man after allegedly discovering two unlicensed firearms and ammunition in Bhekuzulu.

A 55-year-old man has been arrested in Vryheid after police allegedly discovered two unlicensed firearms and ammunition during an intelligence-driven operation in Bhekuzulu township.

Intelligence-driven investigation

According to a statement posted on the official Facebook page of the South African Police Service, the arrest took place on Friday (March 13) when members carried out an operation following information about an individual allegedly in possession of illegal firearms.

“Police in Vryheid conducted an intelligence-driven operation at Bhekuzulu township after receiving information about an individual who was alleged to be in possession of two unlicensed firearms,” the statement read.

Firearms and ammunition seized

During the operation, officers recovered an assault rifle with 29 rounds of ammunition as well as a 9mm pistol with 15 rounds of ammunition.

“The suspect failed to produce any documentation permitting him to be in possession of the firearms. He was subsequently arrested and charged for unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition,” police said.

Vehicle also seized

Authorities also seized the suspect’s vehicle for further investigation after it was found to have an expired licence disc dating back to 2020 and was being driven without number plates at both the front and the rear.

Court appearance expected

The suspect is expected to appear in the Vryheid Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (Monday) where he will face charges related to the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
