Man sentenced to life for rape and kidnapping

Man receives life sentence for kidnapping, rape and assault in Vryheid.

A 43-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Vryheid Regional Court for the kidnapping, rape and assault of a young woman in the Lakeside Park area in 2020.

Accused found guilty

Bhekani Innocent Zwane was found guilty of attacking the 24-year-old woman, who was unknown to him at the time of the incident.

Abduction after night out

The court heard that on December 6, 2020, the woman had been socialising with friends at a local tavern before walking home alone. Along the way, a vehicle carrying four men stopped next to her. She was forcibly dragged into the car and taken to Lakeside Park.

Assault and rape in isolated location

There, she was assaulted and taken to a room, where Zwane raped her twice after forcing her to undress. The woman later managed to escape and sought help at a nearby home before being taken to hospital for treatment.

DNA evidence leads to arrest

Although the suspect was initially unknown to the victim, a breakthrough came when Zwane was arrested in an unrelated matter. DNA evidence later linked him to the crime, leading to his prosecution. His accomplices remain unidentified.

Strong evidence presented in court

During the trial, the State led evidence from the complainant, the investigating officer and a medical professional who examined the victim. The medical report and DNA evidence formed a crucial part of the case.

Sentencing and additional orders

Zwane was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape, four years for kidnapping and one year for assault. The sentences will run concurrently. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm and his name will be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

NPA welcomes outcome

National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara welcomed the outcome.

“This sentence sends a clear message that perpetrators of gender-based violence will be held accountable for their actions,” she said.

The NPA said it hopes the successful finalisation of the case will bring a measure of justice to the survivor.
