Local woman faces cancer battle, needs urgent support

Local mother faces urgent cancer surgery as community rallies to support her.

A local woman known for her resilience, kindness and unwavering faith is facing yet another battle with cancer, and this time, the community is being called on to help.
Annatjie Venter, a mother of three and long-time resident, has endured a series of life-altering challenges over the past three decades, yet remains a source of encouragement and hope to those around her.

Decades of health battles

Her journey has been marked by repeated health struggles. In 1993, while pregnant, she was diagnosed with uterine cancer and underwent a hysterectomy shortly after the birth of her daughter. More than a decade later, in 2004, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy.

Personal loss and strength

Tragedy struck again in 2005 when her husband, Hendrik, died in a motor vehicle accident, leaving her to raise her family on her own. Despite this, she went on to officially adopt her foster son in 2007, becoming a single mother of three.

Ongoing medical challenges

Over the years, Venter has also battled thyroid cancer, skin cancer and other health complications. She found love again and remarried her high school sweetheart in 2016, continuing to rebuild her life while undergoing further medical treatment.

Urgent diagnosis and need for surgery

Now, in April 2026, she faces a recurrence of thyroid cancer, this time affecting the remaining nodule on the left side of her throat. She urgently requires a total retrosternal thyroidectomy.

Financial strain and time pressure

However, with no medical aid and public healthcare waiting times estimated at up to six months, the delay could place her at serious risk as the cancer may spread. The cost of the life-saving surgery is estimated at around R250,000.

Community steps in to help

Friends, family and community members have launched a fundraising effort to help cover the cost of the procedure. They say the surgery will give Venter the chance to continue working, writing and inspiring others through her story.

A life of giving back

Throughout her life, Venter has remained committed to uplifting those around her, often sharing stories and poems rooted in faith and hope. Those close to her describe her as someone who continues to give, even in the face of adversity.

Call for support

The community is now being urged to support her in any way possible, whether through donations, sharing her story or keeping her in their thoughts.

Standing together in support

Supporters say that after everything she has endured, this is a moment for others to stand alongside her.
