Heist unfolds near royal residence on R66

Gunmen ambush cash vehicle on R66 in dramatic daylight heist.

Gunfire shattered the quiet of a rural stretch of the R66 this afternoon (Wednesday) when a brazen cash-in-transit heist unfolded near the Mpakama area, close to a royal residence.

Attackers strike with deception

According to information gathered at the scene, a security vehicle travelling between Nongoma and Pongola was ambushed shortly after. Witnesses say another bakkie approached at high speed from behind, flashing blue lights to mimic law enforcement before chaos erupted.

Vehicle forced to a stop

Shots rang out as the attackers opened fire on the moving vehicle, forcing it to a stop after its tyres were damaged. A group of armed men then surrounded the vehicle, their faces concealed, and ordered the occupants to get out.

Explosives used in heist

Moments later, an explosive device was allegedly used to breach the vehicle. Amid the confusion, the suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash and at least one firearm taken during the incident.

No serious injuries reported

Despite the intensity of the attack, no serious injuries were reported.

Police confirm coordinated robbery

Authorities who responded to the scene confirmed that the incident was a coordinated cash-in-transit robbery. Investigations are underway as officials work to track down those responsible.
