Newcastle Club golf day drives fundraising success
A strong field of 67 players helped the Newcastle Club raise funds for building repairs.
Club secretary Jacky Pederson described the Newcastle Club sponsored golf day as ‘an excellent day with good vibes and a great turnout’.
Golf day strengthens ties between two clubs
67 players took to the greens on Saturday to compete for the first place prize, a half sheep for each winning player sponsored by the Newcastle Club through its raffle sales.
At the end of the day, it was Sanjay Singh and Sunil Magan who came first with 47 points.
Ronell Singh and Balan Naidoo came second (46 points onco), while club manager Elred Darvall and his wife, Jenny, came third (46 points onco).
In fourth place were Sheng-Po Tseng and Mukie Ghasitha (44 points onco), while Johan Jonker and Louis du Plessis came fifth (44 points onco).
Fundraising supports historic club
Besides being a social gathering between members of the Newcastle Club and those of the Newcastle Golf Club, the golf day also serves as a fundraising event, with proceeds going towards the repairs and maintenance of the Newcastle Club building.
“Many members of the Newcastle Club are also members of the Newcastle Golf Club, so it’s a great way for the clubs to support each other,” said Pederson.
According to Pederson, the Newcastle Club, which operates as a non-profit organisation, was founded in 1903 by English generals and served as a gentlemen’s club for many years until women were invited to join as well.
Members enjoy the club facilities, which include a squash court, dining hall, and conference and events venues.
Residents interested in joining can visit the club, which is situated at 29 Bird Street.
