Police explain circumstances surrounding 5-year-old’s tragic death

Newcastle police have confirmed that an inquest has been opened into the death of five-year-old Kiara Mohan.

An inquest has been opened into the death of five-year-old Kiara Mohan, who tragically died after a municipal skip bin fell on top of her at the Suryaville Municipal Flats on Friday afternoon (May 15).

Mother rushes downstairs after noticing overturned bin

Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications Officer, SAC Lizzy Arumugam, confirmed the incident and explained the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

According to Arumugam, Kiara had been playing outside with other children when her mother called her upstairs for a bath.

“The mother proceeded upstairs and, while checking through the window, noticed that a municipal skip bin had toppled over. Alarmed, she rushed downstairs and saw only two children standing nearby, looking in the direction of the bin,” explained Arumugam.

Neighbours help take child to hospital

Arumugam said the mother then discovered her daughter lying beneath the overturned bin.

“Overcome with hysteria, the mother screamed while attempting to lift the bin. Her brother came to assist, and together they managed to raise it. A neighbour then helped pull the child out and carried her, but she was unresponsive.”

Neighbours assisted the mother in transporting the child to Mediclinic Newcastle, where doctors attempted to resuscitate the child.

“Sadly, all efforts were unsuccessful and the child was declared deceased,” concluded Arumugam.

The Newcastle Advertiser continues to extend its sincerest condolences to the Mohan family during this extremely difficult time.
