Over 30 years of experience in print media

Nazir Mohammed is currently the regional production manager at the Ladysmith Gazette, specialising in design and layout.

For Nazir Mohammed, the newspaper industry is more than just a career, it is a lifelong passion that has stood the test of time.

With 30 years of service in the newspaper industry, Naz (as he is fondly called by co-workers) has witnessed the transformation of print media from the old cut-and-paste production systems to the fast-paced digital design era used today.

Currently serving as the regional production manager at the Ladysmith Gazette, Naz continues to play a vital role behind the scenes, ensuring that newspapers are professionally designed and visually appealing for readers and advertisers alike.

Naz specialises in design and layout, and has built a reputation for delivering quality work that keeps clients satisfied with their advertisements. His creative eye and technical skills have helped businesses effectively showcase their brands through print media over the years.

Reflecting on his journey, Naz recalls entering the industry in 1990 when designers were known as ‘typesetters’. “When I started, it was the old cut-and-paste system,” he said. “Everything was done manually before the industry evolved into PageMaker and modern computerised systems.”

Over the decades, technology has dramatically changed the production side of newspapers, but Naz believes the essence of print journalism remains strong. “Newspapers have not changed at all because people still want the feel of print,” he explains.

“Newsprint will continue for a long time. Online platforms will not kill print.”

Having spent three decades adapting to changes in the media landscape, Naz remains passionate about the newspaper industry and its future.
