IEC takes voter education campaign to Estcourt Taxi Rank

The campaign comes ahead of the voter registration weekend.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Co-operative Governance & Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) and the Inkosi Langalibalele Department of Communications, conducted a voter education and awareness campaign at the Estcourt Taxi Rank yesterday (June 5).

The initiative aimed to educate residents about voter registration and the voting process ahead of the upcoming 2026 Local Government Elections. Community members, commuters and taxi passengers were engaged directly by officials who shared information on the importance of participating in democratic processes.

Preparations underway for voter registration weekend

The campaign forms part of preparations for the national voter registration weekend scheduled for June 20 and 21.

IEC officials, together with representatives from various government departments, encouraged residents to verify their voting stations and registration details. They reminded voters that changes to municipal boundaries may affect some voting districts, making it important for registered voters to confirm where they will cast their ballots.

Youth encouraged to register and vote

The IEC placed special emphasis on encouraging young people to participate in the electoral process, noting concerns about low levels of youth voter registration. The commission urged all South Africans who will be 18 years or older by June 20-21 to take advantage of the voter registration weekend and register to vote.

Officials stressed that active participation in elections is essential to strengthening democracy and ensuring that citizens have a voice in shaping their communities and local government.
