Water projects promise relief for more than 3,000 households in rural Nquthu area
New water projects will bring relief and create jobs for thousands of households in Nquthu.
More than 3,000 households in Nquthu are set to benefit from two new water supply projects worth a combined R46.4 million.
uMzinyathi District Municipality Mayor Cllr Thembisile Mchunu launched the projects during a sod-turning ceremony in Thelezini, Ward 16, where residents welcomed the long-awaited investment in water infrastructure.
Projects aim to improve water access
The first project, valued at R30.4 million, will provide water to more than 2,000 households in Hoqo, Nhlangula, Lutheran and Siyamthanda.
A second project worth R16 million will extend water services to more than 1,200 households in Ndinginduku and Phaphamani.
Addressing residents, Mayor Mchunu introduced the contractors appointed to carry out the work and confirmed that construction would begin on Monday.
“The agreed construction period is six months, which means water should be flowing to these communities by January,” he said.
Community members thanked the mayor for fulfilling a commitment to return to the area with new water projects.
Leaders urge residents to protect infrastructure
The event was attended by traditional leaders, Nquthu Mayor Cllr Innocent Shabalala, municipal leadership from both Nquthu and uMzinyathi, and officials led by municipal manager Mr Ntanzi.
Inkosi Mazibuko, chairperson of the uMzinyathi House of Traditional Leaders, urged residents to safeguard public infrastructure and protect municipal assets.
Mayor Shabalala said the projects would improve the lives of residents while creating employment opportunities during the construction phase.
“We thank Mayor Mchunu for fulfilling the promise he made. We can see the work being done, and we appreciate it,” he said.
