Blue Lions retain Derby Day bragging rights

The Blue Lions claimed Derby Day honours after producing a spirited display against Dundee High.

The annual Derby Day once again lived up to expectations on Saturday as Sarel Cilliers High School’s Blue Lions hosted Dundee High School’s Reds in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd.

Despite bitterly cold conditions and frost-covered fields during the early morning warm-ups, players from both schools delivered outstanding performances across a range of sporting codes.

From the hockey fields and rugby pitches to the netball courts and chess boards, competitors showcased their skills and determination, while supporters, including many old scholars, cheered them on throughout the day.

The hockey fixtures produced several closely contested encounters, with both schools displaying impressive skill and commitment. The quality of play attracted growing crowds as the day’s action unfolded.

On the rugby field, however, Sarel Cilliers proved too strong.

The main rugby clash developed into a thrilling contest. Dundee High fought back bravely to draw level at 10-10, but the Blue Lions raised the intensity after the break and extended their advantage to 29-10.

Rivals produce memorable contests across sporting codes

Dundee launched a determined late assault, but Sarel Cilliers held firm to secure victory and retain Derby Day bragging rights.

Played in excellent spirit, the match highlighted the strength of schoolboy rugby in the area and provided spectators with an entertaining spectacle.

The netball courts produced equally competitive encounters, with honours shared between the schools. Dundee High, however, secured first-team honours following a strong performance.

Meanwhile, there was nothing to separate the schools on the chessboards, where the contest ended in a hard-fought draw.

Once again, Derby Day proved to be far more than a sporting fixture, serving as a celebration of competition and sportsmanship.
